NEWS: Maersk Hit by Cyber Attack

Maersk confirmed yesterday that its IT systems are currently down due to a widespread cyber attack. The attack, similar to the recent “WannaCry” attack, targeted various firms, airports and government departments around the globe through the use of ransomware.

Below are the most recent Maersk, port and terminal updates. 

  • Maersk is currently unable to tender quotes or accept new bookings
  • Communication with Maersk customer service via phone, website or EDI has also been impacted
  • Maersk said its vessels are maneuverable, able to communicate and crews are safe
    • Cargo in transit will be offloaded as planned
    • All immediate vessel operations will continue as intended, making the majority of planned port calls
      • According to the JOC, Maersk vessels calling at terminals in Virginia, Charleston and Savannah continued normally yesterday
  • APMT at the Port of New York-New Jersey will remain closed today
    • According to its website, operations for Thursday, June 29, are to be determined
    • APMT employees at the port are still without email or office telephone services
    • Free time has been extended by two (2) business days
    • APM ELZ continues to work vessels
  • Operations at APMT Pier 400 at the Port of Los Angeles for today have not yet been confirmed but the facility is expected to remain closed today
  • APMT’s Maasvlakte II terminal in Rotterdam was closed yesterday and is still closed.
  • JNPT (Jawaharlal Nehru Port) confirmed in a trade announcement that the attack is impacting the Terminal Operating System, emails and other operating systems at Gateway Terminals India (GTI), also known as APMT Mumbai
  • The Port of Barcelona stated one of its terminals operated by Maersk has been impacted

Important:

July 1 unofficially marks the start of peak shipping season. The cyber attack on Maersk is expected to further impact space with both carriers and shippers. Importers and exporters are strongly encouraged to place bookings as early as possible to avoid delays.
