The challenge

A big-box retailer needed to transport highly sensitive data from a data center in South Carolina to Michigan. The data, including confidential customer details and proprietary information, was transferred to tapes due to security risks and compliance regulations that prohibited cloud transfer. To protect this information, the retailer required physical transportation with strict security throughout the entire process. The shipment had to occur overnight while stores were closed, and be completed before they opened the next morning to avoid any disruption to operations.

The solution

Ascent was able to provide a custom, secure solution with its On-Board Courier (OBC) service. To further reduce risk and guarantee safe delivery, Ascent arranged for couriers to take overnight flights to Michigan, hand-delivering the cases and keeping them in sight at all times.

 

The process was carefully planned, with Ascent coordinating closely with airport security to manage the handling of the cases and avoid X-ray machines during screening. This attention to detail was essential for protecting the data, as any exposure could damage the contents.

The result

Ascent’s OBC service successfully transported the sensitive data in four separate moves, all completed on weekends after the stores had closed for the night. With a tight timeline to meet, this careful coordination allowed the retailer to transfer the data between data centers without compromising its security, achieving their goal of keeping the information safe and secure.
